South Portland (Maine) (Lighthouses, boating and lobster) ⚓️

It is time for a new post so here it is. As I told you within my last post something pretty intense was going to happen. After we left Bar Harbor the first thing we did was heading to the gas station in order to get some gas and coffee. As we were filling our tank we heard the horrible cry of a young woman. Instantly we realized that something was wrong. I have never heard a person screaming like that before. The scream literally rented the air. A vehicle has apparently rolled over the woman. The woman was kind of lucky that it stopped right at her chest since it would have probably smashed her head otherwise. She must had tried to stop the vehicle by pushing it after it started going down the surface irregularities. She probably wanted to save the car from crashing into a big truck. That’s the only way this incident could have occurred. The only thing I still can’t fully explain myself is that the front-seat passenger, a girl probably at the age of 15 or something did not do anything to stop the car. She was proabably just paralyzed from the shock. Well, never try to stop an automatic car that suddenly starts moving. This woman is probably to regret it for the rest of her life. Immediately we rushed to the woman and tried to help her. We pushed the car away from her body and called into 911. After the ambulance arrived we were not able to do anything anymore so we decided to leave that place. This event definitely made us feel low. I am sure I will not soon forget that incident. Even though we had a great stay in Bar Harbor we will presumably always relate this tragic occurrence with it. Thankfully we were there at the time the incident occurred and were able to save a woman’s life. Otherwise it probably would have ended differently. In the evening we googled and saw that the woman had some severe injury but definitely survived.

The first place we now aimed to stop at was Camden. Camden is a pretty small but very neat town in the center of Maine right at the ocean. There we a lot of cool shops and restaurants. Another highlight was the harbor.img_0238

We decided to take a short walk through the town since a long ride was imminent. That was the last time we stopped though due to the fact that we did not arrive that late. We still wanted to actually do stuff for the half of the day. I am not quite sure what time we exactly made it there but the pure car ride took about 3.5 hours. We decided to take some scenic roads next to ocean so we definitely had a good time there. Our next Bed and Breakfast place was pretty awesome. It was located in Cape Elizabeth so not downtown Portland. It was nicer since we were almost right next to the ocean very close to the a couple lighthouses. Furthermore we were able to see the bay as well as the famous Portland Head light from some rooms. Shortly after our arrival we decide to explore the surroundings. We went to Fort Willams Park. That was the park where the Portland Head light was at. I really enjoyed all the ambience. The lighthouse is located at the promontory of the Portland bay. The waves crash into an unusual rock formation. Moreover you can see about 3 more lighthouses from the park as well as a lot boats coming in.  I can now understand why it is called the most photographed lighthouse in America. I mean I have seen quite a lot lighthouse before and I really liked that one.

Afterwards we went to the store to get some food. In the evening we were sitting outside and observing the lighthouse.

After that we talked to our hosts a little bit who were able to tell us a lot about the area and Boston which was our next destination. They also invited us to join them on a boat tour the day after which was going to be very awesome!

So in the next morning we went to the harbor and met Jeff there, a good friend of our host. The weather was fantastic again. 28 degrees Celsius and sunny. We could not have asked for a better day in Portland. The first place we went to was Peaks Island, an island that is pretty close to the actual city Portland. There are not many people actually living there. The most people are tourists, most of them are just there for a day. We actually only went there to get some breakfast. We went to small coffee shop. It was tiny and very dainty. We had some breakfast sandwiches and crossaints. Afterwards we went back on the boat and shortly after we left we came across a big branch that was floating through the bay. As it can afflict some serious damage to the boats out there we talked to the harbor master who was not able to help but told us to bring that branch to a wharf somewhere in Portland. So we tied up the branch and went to the particular place. After we got a rid of the branch we continued our actual tour. We passed a couple of lighthouses on the way to the Portland Head Light. I got to see the lighthouse again. From a different perspective though which was splendid.

Following this we passed the fourth lighthouse which look kind of bedraggled. It was in the middle of the ocean and not on the dry land like the other three ones. Our next destination now was Jewell Island. It was a bit further from the mainland than Peaks Island but still reachable within like 1.5 hours. Nobody actually lives on that island anymore. There was one person who used to take care of it but not anymore. During the summer time there are quite a lot of people that bring to anchor there, so did we. The Island is pretty deserted apart from the beach area. Like some boy scouts used to camp there a lot. It was also used for the military somehow I think. We took some stuff with us and went for a hike. We wanted to go to that one abandoned tower to get a fantastic view over the islands and the ocean. After 20 minutes of walking we reached that one tower. Afterwards we walked back towards the beach and walked through some derelict tunnels. We hung out at the beach for a little before we left that island again. Subsequently we went back to the harbor where we started the boat ride in the morning. We had such a great time! In the evening we invited Jeff for some lobster dinner at the yacht harbor of Portland. It was delicious as always. In the evening we planned some stuff for Boston already.

The next day was one of the lazy days. We did not do that much since the weather was not that great and we were going to watch the semi final between Germany and France. Since I lost my “NEW YORK HOME” pillow in Woodstock, New Hampshire and we did not have that much going on we decided to get the pillow and drive back. On the drive there we passed the most scenic highway of New England again so it was worth it. Yeah in the evening we watched the game and I do not think I have to add more to that. On the next day we left Portland/Cape Elizabeth again. We experienced a lot again! Furthermore we made some new friends in Portland.

That’s it for today. More about Boston and Concord is coming soon.
